Loveless Questions Federal Funding Breakdown for Churchill Falls Deal

Quebec is getting more money from the federal government as part of the Churchill Falls deal because it is assuming more risk – that’s according to officials with Natural Resources Canada.

A total of $10-billion has been set aside by Ottawa as part of the deal. Quebec will see $6.5-billion of that, with the remaining $3.5-billion coming to this province.

Liberal MHA Elvis Loveless asked why Quebec gets more during debate in the House of Assembly this morning.

Director General with Natural Resources Canada, Sharonne Katz, says the federal money will go to those who are making the investments.

Loveless pressed on, asking whether the negotiating team could have “aggressively pursued” having the majority of the funding given to this province.

Katz, however, argues that the federal funding benefits both jurisdictions because the projects will get built. She uses Gull Island as an example, calling it a “huge asset for the region.”
