Hockey with Heart: Annual Charity Game Honours Young Lives Lost

The Baker Flooring Senior Blues are hosting the 4th Annual Sammy’s Superhero Game today at the CBS Arena.

The Blues are taking on the Outer Cove Marines in what is being described as one of the most “meaningful and anticipated” hockey games of the season.

This year’s game is being dedicated to the memory of 16-year-old J.D. Trainor who lost his battle with cancer one year ago.

Blues General Manager Jonathan Kavanagh says Trainor epitomized the definition of a hockey player;

“Tough on the ice, strong on the ice, but off the ice, a true gentleman,” Kavanagh told the Tim Powers Show. “So he really fit the bill, and for someone who was so passionate about hockey, we felt, ‘What better way to honour him and those around him but with a hockey game?'”

Youth admission for today’s game is free. All proceeds will be donated to Sammy’s Climb Higher Foundation which was created after the passing of 6-year-old Sammy Porter of CBS in a swimming accident in July of 2022.

The game gets underway at 2:00 this afternoon at the CBS arena.
