A new multi-sport facility in the Galway area of St. John’s is still on the books, but things are moving along slower than organizers had hoped.
The sports-plex would be comprised of four regulation-size arenas, curling sheets and many more amenities to accommodate a range of indoor sports.
The provincial government allocated $500,000 last year to go toward design work.
Jack Lee, a former president of Hockey NL, says the building, which would sit on land donated by Danny Williams, would be about 260,000 square feet.
He says it’s much more than a metropolitan sports building – it would be for the entire province.
“Instead of moving away for training, they could do it here,” says Lee.
“It will also incorporate a restaurant/bar, a sports medicine clinic, pro-shop, a walking track…”
Lee had originally hoped to have the facility up and running in time for the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s but is now aiming for 2028.
